Since 1951 the Automotive Manufacturers Racing Association (AMRA) has been the
collective and responsible voice of the British motorsports industry. Members
include the best known names amongst motorsport manufacturing companies as well
as the smaller, but no less important, businesses that have long been the hot
bed of technical and commercial innovation. Together these companies have created
the dynamic and internationally renowned business sector that we know today.
With over 100 members drawn from all sectors of the industry (two wheels and four),
AMRA represents its members at all levels of motorsport administration from local
championship organisers to international event organisers and governing bodies.
AMRA was originally formed by a small group of companies to negotiate access to
motorsport events so that they could properly provide technical support for their
customers. This remains a major function of AMRA, indeed organisers often look to
AMRA to confirm the credentials of companies requesting circuit access on their
behalf. AMRA Technical Centres are to be found at most of the UK’s major
motorsport events, providing a working base for members.
Increasingly, because of the authority created by its membership and long
established contacts with governing bodies such as the Motor Sport Association
(formerly RAC MSA) and the Auto Cycle Union, AMRA has been able to work for the
development and continued good health of the British motorsports industry.
AMRA has either launched, or been invited to contribute to important initiatives
designed to benefit the whole industry.
For example, AMRA made significant contributions to the work of the DTI
Motorsport Development Panel, which resulted in the announcement in 2003
of £16 million of government funding to help sustain and develop the so called
UK Motorsport Cluster. As an organisation founded in the manufacturing sector,
AMRA was the first to recognise the problems faced by member companies in
recruiting skilled technicians and to seek a practical solution to the problem.
A commission from the DTI for AMRA to report on Education and Skills Development
for motorsport has led to the development of a Centre for Vocational Excellence
(National College for Motorsport) on a site provided by the BRDC at Silverstone.
Originally an AMRA initiative, this will now be financed by central government
and run by Tresham Institute in Northampton, but will continue to draw on the
experience and expertise of AMRA’s members and partners. The National College
for Motorsport will provide vocational training and qualifications with access
to current motorsport technology.
AMRA is represented and active in considering far-reaching changes to the
structure of motorsport in Britain. Such changes will undoubtedly have
commercial consequences for motorsport equipment manufacturers and suppliers
and it is important that their opinions are considered. The MSA Technical Panel
and the MSA Race and Rally Committees also include AMRA representatives.
In the world of Motorcycle sport AMRA has close links to the ACU and also sits
on the advisory panel to the Motorcycle Industry Association Road Race Group.
AMRA also maintains close links with circuit operators (AMRCO) and championship
organisers.
AMRA maintains a key role in providing the motorsport manufacturing industry with
an excellent opportunity to showcase its products and services. By working
together with Exhibition organisers to ensure the industry has a firm stage to
promote its benefits to the wider audience.
Since its formation AMRA has worked hard on behalf of its member companies and
continues to do so. Membership not only brings practical benefits such as
reduced rates to a variety of business services, but also the opportunity
to develop useful relationships with other motorsport companies.
More than that, membership of AMRA demonstrates a company’s commitment both to
its customers and to the future of the motorsports industry in United Kingdom.
